Ze zijn duidelijk aan elkaar gewaagd, Jan-Willem en Lara. Dat zit in hun vlotte babbel en het snelle denken. En in de humor natuurlijk, hoewel er in de situatie van Lara weinig te lachen valt. De inkomsten uit haar eenmansbedrijfje vielen ineens weg door corona. Haar schulden zijn niet goed te overzien, terwijl de aanmaningen binnenrollen. Daarom is vrijwilliger Jan-Willem er elke vrijdag om die met haar in kaart te brengen.  Lara: ‘Niet dat ik het gelijk zag zitten, iemand binnenlaten om me te helpen. Maar toen stond Jan-Willem dus op de stoep. Hij keek me aan met zo’n opgetrokken wenkbrauw. En ik dacht: jou kan ik er wel bij hebben. Het voelde gelijk goed.’ Jan-Willem: ‘Lara overziet het even niet meer, waardoor de post blijft liggen. Samen zoeken we alles systematisch bij elkaar, zodat duidelijk wordt hoe de situatie is. Met dat stapeltje gaan we dan naar de schuldhulpverlening.’

De samenleving wordt steeds digitaler. Handig. Maar niet voor iedereen. Sommige mensen komen door de toenemende digitalisering juist in de problemen. De Regenboog Groep zet digimaatjes in. Een digimaatje helpt stadgenoten met digitale vragen. Samen oefenen achter de computer of met de smartphone. Of helpen bij het aanvragen van een DigiD, het inloggen bij een zorgverzekeraar, het indienen van een sollicitatie op de website van het UWV. Maar ook het helpen met Wordfeud of het chatten met familie.  Digimaatjes zijn hard nodig, aldus Ellina van der Boon. Zij coördineert, het gelijknamige project waarin vrijwilligers worden gekoppeld aan Amsterdammers in digitale armoede. Het probleem is groot. En het groeit. In haar handen heeft Ellina een recent verschenen rapport van de gemeente Amsterdam, uitgevoerd door de Vrije Universiteit met als veelzeggende titel Digitale ongelijkheid.

Rainbow volunteers Sadaf, Lieke and Lennaert regularly go out with a fellow city dweller struggling with mental health issues. What is it like to be a buddy of someone with psychological problems? And what does it actually bring you, being a volunteer?

Many people care about De Regenboog Groep and everyone expresses this in their own way. We see Aardige Amsterdammers helping others from personal experience. We see them volunteering selflessly. Or they donate stuff or money, simply because it is needed more elsewhere. And increasingly, people are including us in their wills. The Regenboog as legatee or heir. For a more social city. Nearly fifty years ago, just after the hippie era, we started. Then we helped addicted young people in the Vondelpark. Now we help thousands of Amsterdam residents scattered throughout the city. People who are homeless, have mental health problems, debts and addictions. People who are lonely, refugees, battered. People can be in trouble for whatever reason. Often it is a combination of problems. We help and offer opportunities. With, for example, nine walk-in centres in Amsterdam and one in Zaanstad. Soon more walk-in centres will be added. These are places where homeless people can catch their breath and are seen as human beings. That this valuable work continues to exist and can adapt to the future needs of our city, you can contribute to that. Even after life. Talk about it "Let's emphasize the importance of bequests," advocates Marloes Wijnekus, fundraiser for De Regenboog Groep. "Support from donors gives us security for the future and bequests are an important part of that. This security is necessary because our work -happily- will also be needed for a long time to come. The demand for help is only increasing: more walk-in centres, more economically homeless people. Often people are reluctant about this subject and we only know that we receive a bequest or inheritance after the donor has died. Of course, we always very carefully find a nice destination, but more openness I would welcome. Talk about it.
