Makom
Van Ostadestraat 153
1073 TK Amsterdam
Makom was founded in the early 1990s. A group of driven volunteers created a safe place for homeless people in the community center near the Orange Church. A few years ago, Makom joined De Regenboog Groep. The walk-in centre is now open seven days a week. Makom is characterized by informal manners. There is also a large group of volunteers; the variety provides a dynamic atmosphere. And there are many activities, also in the evenings. Every week there is a movie night; you have to make a reservation for it, that's how much interest there is from visitors. And there is an open stage, where visitors recite poems and sing songs, among other things. They are small parties: points of light in what is often such a hard life. Makom has been involved in activation from the very beginning, at that time a novelty in social work. For example, there is an art suite where people work on art in the broad sense. You can read more about the art suite and ArtBRUUT here. The Zuid district provides additional subsidies to the sweeping crew of visitors who keep the neighborhood clean.
