Oud West is a kind of large living room, open 365 days a year, mostly for the homeless. Conviviality prevails there. There are no subclubs; everyone gets along with everyone else. The walk-in centre once began as a shelter for lonely elderly people; an initiative of the joint churches of Amsterdam West. Gradually homeless people found a place there because the coffee was so cheap. For several years now it has been part of De Regenboog Groep. The West District gives an extra subsidy for the sweeping crew of visitors who keep the neighborhood clean.
