Van der Laan was patron of the Homeless Union and had worked extensively for the homeless as a lawyer:
"They are often people who have had bad luck and got sidetracked. For these people we have to be there as Amsterdam citizens and we have to support them where necessary. The fantastic volunteers of De Regenboog Groep who help our homeless throughout the year show every day that Amsterdam is there for people who need help."
